Textile HQ design
Bondholder maber architects has designed a high quality and contemporary HQ for a global fabrics firm.
Romo Fabrics is a British family-run business in its fifth generation. Renowned for its diverse range of fabrics, wall covering and accessories, it is recognised internationally as a leader in high-end interior textiles.
The client's core brief and aspiration was to create a discretely beautiful architectural statement building that would epitomise the values of the Romo brand, reflect the Romo Group’s values for distinctive design and, at the same time, reflect their company ethos.
The scheme consolidates the Romo business, which previously was spread across four sites, and brings together the separate elements of office, process and storage space, into one, stunning, headquarters building in Kirkby-in-Ashfield allowing the business greater efficiency and removing the prior need to transport fabrics and other products between each of their sites.
Totalling 33,000m2, the building houses in excess of 350 staff, and is designed to allow for further expansion. The layout of the building consists of three main elements: atrium, offices and warehouse. The elements are all visually connected creating a coherent workplace and unity amongst staff.
One of the central themes that evolved during the concept design stage, was that of a building which would reveal itself in stages and incorporates a large open plaza, a show space which creates an art gallery feel and a magnificent atrium, views of which are teased from the bottom of the showspace staircase.
It was important to the client and maber to bed the building into a beautiful landscape. Romo wanted their staff to be able to get out during the summer and winter months, to walk around and enjoy exercise while still within the site. Maber’s landscape team have designed a variety of different spaces from wild meadow planting, to lawned areas to walk around, all punctuated with places to stop and have a break.
