Derby attractive for FDI
Derby has been ranked in 13th place in the UK and number one in the East Midlands as part of EY’s UK Attractiveness survey.
The report presents the results of an investigation into the distribution of foreign direct investment (FDI) projects into the UK, including first-time investments in the UK and growth at existing foreign-owned businesses in the UK.
Despite the economic uncertainty, the East Midlands performed strongly, attracting 39 projects, one down from the previous year. Eight of those projects are in the Derby city region, making it the number one destination in the East Midlands for FDI.
Like all other UK regions, the East Midlands saw the largest proportion of its investment (36%) come from the US. The second largest proportion of investment (8% each) came from Canada, Italy and the Netherlands.
Manufacturing and logistics accounted for 47% of investment into the East Midlands. The region's access to a skilled workforce, a broad supply chain and strong transport links, making 89% of England and Wales accessible within a four-hour HGV drive were highlighted as key strengths.
New projects landed during 2019 included a new Amazon fulfilment centre in Derbyshire, creating 200 jobs and the expansion of existing projects at Bondholder Bombardier and rail company Train FX.
